PASSION
Translation of several Greek words:
(a) “pathêma”, which denotes suffering (cf. Rom. 8:18), and perverse emotions, evil passions (cf. Gal. 5:24) and expresses, in this case, the unbridled nature of the evil desires that They arise from the flesh.
(b) “Pathos” is a term that in Gk. classical applied to passionate desires, good or bad; in the NT it is used exclusively in a bad sense (cf. Rom. 1:26; Col. 3:5; etc.) Trench describes “pathos” as that bad condition from which it arises.
(c) «hedonë is translated passions in Jas. 4:1 in the sense of the gratification of natural desires. It denotes the fact of satisfying those desires.
(d) “epithumia”, used in 2 Tim. 2:22 translated “youthful passions”
(e) The verb “paschõ”, which is derived from the same root as “pathos”, is applied in numerous passages to the sufferings of Christ.
(f) The term “homoiopathês” is used in Stg. 5:15, lit., “of similar sentiments or affections,” and refers to the similarity of Elijah’s nature to ours.
