ZAFON
“north”. One of the cities that Moses gave to the Gadites in the Jordan Valley (Josh. 13:27; cf. Judges 12:1). The Talmud identifies her with Amatho, that is, Amathus (Ant. 13:13, 5; 14:5, 4).
In this case, it should be identified with Tell ‘Ammatah, in the Jordan Valley, east of the river and 13 km north-northeast of the mouth of the Jabbok. Glueck places it in Tell el-Kos (1943).
