AMASIAS

AMASIAS

“Jehovah has power.”
(a) Son of Joash, king of Judah, he succeeded to the throne; He reigned 29 years, from 796 to 767 BC. He acted well at the beginning of his reign.

He made war against the Edomites; 10,000 of them were killed with knives, and 10,000 more were thrown from a rock.

But he brought with him the gods of the children of Seir, and bowed down before them, so that he fell under the displeasure of God.

He provoked a war against the king of Israel, but was defeated, Jerusalem was sacked, and part of the city destroyed. He died at Lachish, where he had fled to protect himself from a conspiracy (2 Kings 14:1-23; 2 Chron. 25:1-28).

(b) Descendant of Simeon (1 Chron. 4:34).

(c) Son of Hilkiah, descendant of Merari (1 Chron. 6:45).

(d) Israelite priest of the idol erected in Bethel (Am. 7:10-14).
