AMPHIPOLIS
City in eastern Macedonia, almost surrounded by the Strymon River; hence its name, “amphipolis”, which means “around the city.” Paul and Silas passed through it on their way to Philippi (Acts 17:1).
Today, the Empoli neighborhood located on the old site is called “Jeni-keni” or “Neckhorio”, “new city”. It was founded in the 5th century BC. by the Athenians.
