SERAIAH
“soldier of Jehovah.”
(a) Son of Kenaz (1 Chr. 4:13).
(b) Secretary under David (2 Sam. 8:17); called Savsa 1 Chr. 18:16.
(c) One of those ordered to arrest Baruch, secretary of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 36:26).
(d) High priest at the time of Nebuchadnezzar’s taking of Jerusalem. He was executed in Ribla by order of the king of Babylon (2 Kings 25: 18-21; Jer. 52: 24-27).
He was the father of Jozadak, who was deported, and grandfather of the high priest Joshua, who held this high office upon his return from captivity. He was also an ancestor of Ezra (1 Chr. 6:14, 15; Ezra 3:2; 7:1).
(e) Son of Neriah, and chief waiter of the court (Jer. 51:59-64).
(f) One of those who accompanied Zerubbabel on his return from Babylon (Ezra 2:2); receives the name of Azariah in Neh. 7:7.
(g) One of the chief priests who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel (Neh. 12:1, 7). A patriarchal house was named after him in the next generation (Neh. 12:12). He could be the same as the previous one.
(h) Priest, undoubtedly head of a patriarchal house, probably the one mentioned in the previous section.
He put his seal on Nehemiah’s covenant, stipulating the separation between the Gentiles and the Israelites faithful to God’s Law (Neh. 10:2). This priest is perhaps the same as the one in the following section.
(i) Priest, son of Hilkiah; head of the house of God after the captivity (Neh. 11:11).
