SIMEI

SIMEI

“Has heard”. Among several others of the same name:

(a) Son of Gera, of the family of King Saul. When Absalom was master of Jerusalem, Shimei severely insulted David who, with his entourage, was descending the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives.

Upon David’s return he made protests of submission, and he was not then punished. At his death David reminded Solomon of Shimei’s wickedness, because he had cursed the Lord’s anointed king.

Solomon promised to spare Shimei his life on the condition that he not leave Jerusalem, but he broke this commandment, and for this he was executed (2 Sam. 16:5-13; 19:18-23; 1 Kings 2 : 8-46).

(b) An official of King David who was not involved in the usurpation of Adonijah (1 Kings 1:8). Probably the son of Elah who later became Solomon’s steward in Benjamin (1 Kings 4:18).
