El Olam - The Everlasting God, the Eternal God

Companies eventually pass from one owner to another. Whether it’s a family business passed down from one generation to the next, or a larger corporation snatching up a rival, such transactions typically result in uncertainty.

Companies eventually pass from one owner to another. Whether it’s a family business passed down from one generation to the next, or a larger corporation snatching up a rival, such transactions typically result in uncertainty.

Sometimes in the aftermath of such a transition, a business goes under or becomes unrecognizable.

It’s a reminder that no business, no matter how solid, is forever. Brands come and go. At some point, even Apple, Amazon, and Google will be no more.

God is the great exception. He is the one CEO, if you will, who reigns forever and ever. His kingdom is the one entity that will never end.

This is because he is El Olam, which is Hebrew for eternal, everlasting, or forever.

God is impervious to time and change. As the everlasting God, He will never cash in His stock options and hand over the reins to someone else.

Among the many great things about a God who is everlasting is that He can make everlasting agreements! He made an unending covenant with Noah that He would never again flood the whole earth (Genesis 9:11).

He made an eternal covenant with Abraham that He would be his offspring’s God forever (Genesis 17:7). El Olam also makes an irrevocable promise to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ: They will have new, true spiritual life forever (Hebrews 9:15).

Only El Olam, the Eternal God, can make audacious promises: “This is what the LORD says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6).

Because God is eternal, our redemption is secure. Our salvation is guaranteed to last. God does not run a business that He will one day sell to the highest bidder.

Our future is sure and secure because we serve the Eternal God.
In what ways does the eternal nature of God give you confidence?

This Christmas season, let’s remember to thank Him for His most precious gift to us: Himself.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

The Gift of Himself

David Jeremiah
Long ago, there ruled a wise and good king in Persia who loved his people and often dressed in the clothes of a working man or a beggar so he could visit the poor and learn about their hardships.
Father, as we honor the birth of your Son, let us think on mercy, healing, and reconciliation. Amen.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Healing Time

J. Stephen Lang
1868: On this date a political leader who grew up poor, had no formal education and was illiterate until his wife taught him to read and write, issued Proclamation 179 “granting full pardon and amnesty for the offense of treason against the United States during the late Civil War.”
Christmas means you have an eternal home waiting for you. That should make more than the angels sing!

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

A Personal Promise

Charles Stanley
Jesus came to earth with the view of offering you salvation. He wanted you to have a restored relationship with the Father, a relationship that was so close, so intimate, that you would have your special place in the Father’s house (John 14:1–4).
The only people in Israel who did recognize Christ at His birth were humble, unremarkable people.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

The Unexpected Savior

John MacArthur
Scripture records that when John the Baptist began his ministry, “The people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not” (Luke 3:15).
In the incarnation, God spanned the vast chasm of fear that had distanced him from his human creation

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Reflections on the Incarnation and Freedom of God

Philip Yancey
Think of the condescension involved: the incarnation, which sliced history into two parts had more animal than human witnesses. Think, too, of the risk. In the incarnation, God spanned the vast chasm of fear that had distanced him from his human creation.
