This refers to the string of beads used, but also to the method of prayer itself. Popular with Catholics, the rosary devotions involve meditating on the fifteen “mysteries” in the life of Jesus and His mother. “Praying the rosary” includes repetition of the Ave Maria (“Hail Mary,” see 176 [Ave Maria]) and the Lord’s Prayer.
The fifteen “mysteries” are: annunciation, visitation, nativity, presentation, finding the boy Jesus in the temple, agony in Gethsemane, scourging, crown of thorns, carrying the cross, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, descent of the Spirit, assumption of Mary, coronation of Mary as “queen of heaven.”
All but the last two are events found in the New Testament, and most are covered elsewhere in this book.
