The familiar “fish” logo seen on a lot of car bumpers is a symbol of Christianity, but even people who know that may wonder what the connection is.

The Greek word for “fish” is ICHTHUS, with the letters representing Iesous CHristos THeou Uios Soter—“Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.”

The symbol is very old and was used widely by Christians as a signal to one another during times of persecution.

Archaeologists have found the symbol in ancient tombs, seals, rings, and urns.
