CAINAN
(a) Son of Enos, and father of Mahaleel (Gen. 5:9-14; 1 Chron. 1:2; Luke 3:37).
(b) Son of Arphaxad and father of Shelah (Luke 3:36). He is commonly called the “second” Cainan (due to the one already mentioned in Luke 3:37) and is notable for the fact that he does not appear in the Masoretic, Samaritan, Vulgate, or Arabic texts in Gen. 10:24; 11:12; 1 Chr. 1:18, and yet it is found in the LXX version.
It is believed that it passed from it to the gospel of Luke, unless, as some suppose, it was added in later copies of the LXX because it was found in Luke.
