Assyrian city founded by Nimrod; It was part of a group of cities that the Hebrews included under the name “great city.” After Assurbanipal, Cala was built, or rebuilt, beautified and fortified by Shalmansar I.
At the beginning of the 9th century BC, Cala was in clear decline. Assurnazirbal restored it, erected a palace, and made it the royal residence. For more than 150 years, Cala was the favorite residence of Assyrian monarchs.
Its ruins, which are known today as Nimrod, are located about 32 km south of Nineveh. Among many other archaeological remains, such as the palaces of Ashurnazirbal, Shalmansar I and III, and others, the famous black obelisk of Shalmansar III was found, in which King Jehu appears as a tributary of Assyria, as well as other steles with inscriptions mentioning to Ahab and various incidents related in the Bible.
