SALARY

SALARY

In ancient times, wages were frequently paid in kind (Gen. 29:15, 20; 30:28-34), and also in silver (Ex. 2:9).

The Law of Moses ordered the payment of each worker at the end of the day (Lev. 19:13; Deut. 24:14, 15).

The prophets denounced those who withheld money owed to their workers (Jer. 22:13; Mal. 3:5; Jas. 5:4).

In the time of Christ, wages for a day’s work amounted to one denarius (Matt. 20:2). The purchasing power of this sum was high, although we do not know it exactly (cf. Luke 10:35).
