ALFEO

ALFEO

(a) Father of Levi the tax collector (Mt. 2:14), who is generally identified with the apostle and evangelist Matthew. We know nothing more about him from the Bible.

(b) Another character who bears this name is the father of the apostle James, who is also called “the son of Alphaeus” to distinguish him from James the son of Zebedee (Mt. 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6 :15; Acts 1:13).

There are no compelling reasons to identify him with the other character who bears this name and who is the father of Levi. There have also been attempts to identify him with Cleopas (Lk. 24:18) and with the other Cleopas (Jn. 19:25).

The identification of these characters with Alfeo cannot be sustained for reasons of a linguistic nature.
