ANAKITES

“long neck”.
People of tall stature, who inhabited Canaan. The expeditionaries sent by the Israelites to explore the land they were to occupy came alarmed when they saw these giants, who in Hebrew were called “nephilim” (Josh. 11:21, 22).

Defeated by the Israelites in the conquest of the promised land (Joshua 14:6-14; 15:13-19; 21:11), a remnant of them remained in the land of the Philistines. The giant Goliath was probably one of them (Num. 13:23, 34; Josh. 10:36; 11:22).
