ANOINTED
Heb. “Mashiach,” the anointed one, is an official title in the OT, applied to those who were to exercise government on behalf of God (1 Sam. 12:3, 5; 26:9, 11, 16; 2 Chron. 6: 42; Isa. 45:1).
In the NT the title is restricted to the Lord Jesus, “ho christos,” the Christ, as the One who was anointed not with oil but with the Holy Spirit by God the Father.
This had been pre-announced in Ps. 45:7, of which John the Baptist was a witness (Mark 1:10; Jn. 1:32-34; cf. also Acts 10:38). He was called God’s anointed by Hannah (1 Sam. 2:10 and by David Ps. 2:2). Daniel spoke of the Messiah the Prince and that he would be cut off and have nothing (Dan. 9:25-26).
The Samaritans, like the Jews, waited for this Anointed One, the Christ, and when He appeared there were souls who entered into a living relationship with Him, recognizing Him as the one who had been promised (John 1:41; 4:25).
In these two passages, the Lord receives the name “Messiah”, the transliteration Gr. of the Hebrew term. “mashiach.” In other passages the Gr. translation is used. “ho christos”, the Christ, the Anointed One
