AQUILA

AQUILA

«eagle» (lat.).
A converted Jew from Pontus, husband of Priscilla. Paul met him in Corinth (Acts 18:2). He and Pablo worked together as tent makers.

Aquila and Priscilla had been expelled from Rome under Claudius’ edict against the Jews. They traveled with Paul to Ephesus, where they were able to help Apollos spiritually (Acts 18:18-26).

They were still in Ephesus when Paul wrote the first epistle to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 16:19), and they were in Rome when the epistle was written to the believers there.

In it Paul says that they had risked their lives for him, and that he and all the Gentile churches were grateful (Rom. 16:3, 4). In Paul’s last epistle he still sends them greetings (1 Tim. 4:19).
