ARARAT
Toponym of a mountainous region of Armenia next to the middle course of the Araxes, where, according to Gen. 8:4, Noah’s ark settled.
The Ararat is probably the Urartu kingdom in the Armenian mountains, spoken of in cuneiform inscriptions, and whose flourishing developed between the 9th and 7th centuries.
Here Sennacherib’s two sons fled after murdering his father (2 Kings 19:37). Today two mountains in Armenia are called Ararat.
The farmers of the region have traditions about Noah’s ark. During the decade from 1973 to 1983, many expeditions were carried out to explore the region and the Ararat Mountains.
