AROER
“naked, nudity.”
Name given to three towns in the Old Testament.
(a) Village along the banks of the Arnon River. It was the southern point of the kingdom of the Amorites ruled by Sihon (Deut. 2:36; Josh. 12:2; Judges 11:26), and later of the tribe of Reuben (Josh. 13:16); but it was fortified and occupied by the Gadites (Num. 32:34). It is now called Arair and is a desolate place south of Dibon.
(b) A city in Gilead, on the border of Gad (Josh. 13:25).
(c) A village in Judah where David sent the spoils after his victory over the Amalekites (1 Sam. 30:28). It was located in the Negev and played an important role in the El-Amarna letters.
