Two characters appear with this name in the Bible:
(a) Asa son of Elkanah and father of Berechiah, inhabitant of the Netophatite towns. His son was one of those who returned from exile and settled in Jerusalem (1 Chron. 9:16).
Asa third king of Judah and reformer of the customs of the people. He reigned 41 years (911-870). He eliminated the idols that his ancestors had introduced and encouraged the people's return to the worship of the true God (1 Kings 15:12, 13; 2 Chron. 15:8, 17; 1 Kings 15:15).
He took a census of the population, fortified the borders, victoriously repelled the invaders. He was succeeded by his son Jehoshaphat. Matthew includes him among the ancestors of Christ (1 Kings 15:17-22, 23; 1 Chron. 14:5, 6; 14:9-15; 16:7-20; Mt. 1:7).
