BADGER
The term “tahash” has modernly been attributed to various animals, mainly the seal and the dugong, as well as the dolphin.
However, the ancient badger translation, supported by ancient versions and Talmudic literature, does not face any linguistic difficulties.
In addition, there is a possible etymological relationship with the lat. “taxus” and the German “Dachs”. Badger skins (“Meles taxus”) appear to be entirely suitable for the purpose for which they were used.
They are good protection from inclement weather, and the tahash was used as the outer covering of the Tabernacle, and as protection for the ark when it was transported.
In one passage it is mentioned as material for delicate women’s shoes or sandals, and in Exodus it is included among articles of great price, which is consistent with the fact that it was not an abundant material (Ex. 25:5; 26: 14; 35:7, 23; 36:19; 39:34; Num. 4:6-25; Ezek. 16:10).
