Place where grain is stored and also, by extension, sheaves, hay, and straw (Ps. 144:13; JI. 1:17; Mt. 3:12).
They could be warehouses (Ex. 1:11) or granaries dug into the ground, silos (Jer. 41:8).
In Egypt, granaries were highly developed and separated from houses. They were filled through an opening near the roof that was accessed by a ladder; At the base there was a door to remove the grain under its own weight.
In Egyptian texts the names of granary scribe, provost, or granary superintendent appear frequently.
The indications of Gen. 41:35, 48-49, 56 have been verified in detail, particularly by the scenes reproduced on the monuments.
