BED

BED

In ancient times there were beds of many different types.
For the poor, they were limited to some mats that could be rolled up in the morning, and stored in a corner. Thus, a healed person could “take” his bed (Mt. 9:6; Mark 2:9, 11, 12; Jn. 5:8-12).

To cover yourself, a blanket was enough, and in winter a thicker one; but they often wore their own dresses. This explains the law that a cloak taken as a pledge was to be returned when the sun set, so that its owner could sleep warmly in it (Deut. 24:13).

Simple divans were used as the bed itself. In Proverbs we are given a description of a luxurious bed, “with quilts embroidered with Egyptian cord” (Pr. 7:16).

Beds were made with real armor of wood or even iron, like that of the king of Bashan, Og (Deut. 3:11), and of ivory (Am. 6:4).
