BURIAL

Burial, placing a corpse in the ground, funeral honors.
When a death occurred, the friends rushed to the mortuary house, shouting loudly, especially the women (Mark 5:38); even mourners were hired (Jer. 9:17).

The body was washed (Acts 9:37), which was then wrapped in a cloth or tied with bandages (Mt. 27:59; Jn. 11:44). The rich added perfumes and spices (Jn. 12:7; 19:39) which were sometimes burned (Jer. 34:5).

The body was deposited in a cave or in a tomb dug horizontally in the rock (Gen. 25:9, 10; Mt. 27:60; 2 Sam. 3:31; Luke 7:14).
