The Hebrew censuses were done according to tribe, family, house, etc. The first took place at Sinai (Ex. 38:26). The second, a year later (Num. 1-3). The third, upon entering Canaan (Num. 26). The fourth, in the reign of David (2 Sam. 24:1-9). Another biblical census was the one ordered by Augustus Caesar (Lk. 2:1).
