CONSECRATION

CONSECRATION

Act by which a person or an object is set apart for the service and worship of the Lord.
All the firstborn of men and animals were thus consecrated to God (Ex. 13:2).

Abraham’s entire race was to become a “kingdom of priests and holy people” (Ex. 19:5-6; 1 Pet. 2:9); Because of Israel’s fall into idolatry after the golden calf, only the tribe of Levi and the house of Aaron inherited the priesthood (Ex. 32:29, etc.).

Thus it was that in an immediate sense the Levites were brought out from among the rest of Israel for sanctuary service (Num. 3:12).
This consecration could also affect,

to people (1 Sam. 1:11; 7:1),
tithes and firstfruits (Lev. 19:24; 27:30, 32),
to the booty taken in battle (Josh. 6:19),

to the offerings given voluntarily to the Lord (1 Chr. 29:2-5; 2 Chr. 31:6).
