CUP

CUP

There are several Hebrew terms from which it is translated, for the different uses that the cup had.
It is frequently used of the contents of the cup, causing both joy and pain, as “I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord” (Ps. 116:13).

“For the cup is in the hand of the Lord, and the wine is fermented… they will drain it to the bottom, and all the wicked of the earth will drink it” (Ps. 75:8; cp. Rev. 14:10; 16:19, etc.).

It is especially used of the cup that the Lord Jesus drank as he bore sin upon Himself (Mt. 26:27, 39, 42; Jn. 18:11).

In the Lord’s Supper the “cup” is spoken of to denote the wine that is the emblem of the blood of Christ (1 Cor. 10:16, 21; 11:25-28).
