EARRINGS
The Israelites, both men, women and children, wore this ornament (Ex. 32:2), especially the women (Ez. 16:12; Jdt. 10:4).
The Midianites also used them (Num. 31:50), as did many ancient peoples, such as the Assyrians, the Egyptians, etc.
This would be an unremarkable custom, except for the fact that on many occasions they were used as amulets (cf. Is. 3:20).
The men and women of Jacob’s family led them in following idolatrous practices, until Jacob ordered them to get rid of foreign gods (Gen. 35:4).
These earrings were made of gold (Ex. 32:2; cf. Prov. 25:12) or other precious metals. The text does not always indicate whether these were ear earrings or nose rings (Gen. 24:22, 30; Ex. 35:22).
