EZION-GEBER

EZION-GEBER

One of the camps of the children of Israel, near the head of the Gulf of Akaba. There Solomon had a fleet of ships, and there Jehoshaphat’s ships were broken (Num. 33:35, 36; Deut. 2:8; 1 Kings 9:26; 22:48; 2 Chron. 8:17; 20: 36).

Very close to Elat, it has been identified with the latter since the time of Uzziah. No trace of Ezion-geber is found on the present coastline.

It is probable, however, that in former times the sea covered a considerable extent of a sediment plain at the southern end of Wadi el-‘Arabah, and that the ruins of Ezion-geber lie near the source of Ain elGhudyan at about 22 kilometers from the current head of the Gulf of Ákaba.
