Also known as Byblos, modern Jebeil. Ancient city of Phoenicia, on the Mediterranean, near the mouth of the Adonis River, 38° 8′ N.
Its inhabitants are called “Giblites” in Joseph. 13:5. There were good stonemasons among them, and they helped in the construction of the temple (1 Kings 5:18). Caulkers and shipbuilders are also mentioned (Ez. 27:9).
In the time of Alexander the Great, the city submitted peacefully, and provided him with a fleet to help him in the siege of Tire (332 BC).
