GENESSARET

GENESSARET

(The first syllable of the name is an obvious derivation of the Hebrew “gan”, “orchard”; it could be a compound, “gannë sãrîm”, “princely orchard”).

Name of a plain that borders the lake of its name, or Sea of Galilee (see) to the northwest. It is about 2 km wide and 5 km long north-south, reaching near Tell Hum. It has some springs, as well as three streams that cross it.

Well irrigated, it is extremely fertile.
Josephus gives an enthusiastic description (Wars 3:10, 8). Being near Capernaum, there is no doubt that the Lord visited it frequently, and that many of his miracles took place there (Mt. 14:34; Mark 6:53).
Its Arabic name is Ghuweir.
