(a) A mountainous region, famous for its forests (Jer. 22:6-7), east of the Jordan, extending from the plain of Moab beyond the Yarmouk River.
It is divided into two parts by the Jabbok River (Josh. 12:2; Deut. 3:16, 17). The southern part was assigned to the tribe of Gad and the northern part was included in the territory of Manasseh (Deut. 3:12, 13).
The last interview between Laban and Jacob took place there.
He produced the famous balm of Gilead and other medicinal plants (Gen. 37:25; Jer. 8:22); There were also many pastures (Num. 32:1).
