HAMMER

HAMMER

In a figurative sense it designates any power that breaks. Babylon was a hammer over the entire earth (Jer. 50:23). The Word of God is like a hammer that breaks the rock (Jer. 23:29).

Another instrument of the same genre is the so-called “Maqqabeth” (from which many scholars derive the term “Maccabeus”, although other explanations are also given).

The latter was used to secure the stakes to which tents were tied (Judges 4:21), and also in construction (1 Kings 6:7), and to make idols (Is. 44:12; Jer. 10 :Four. Five).
