HOREB
(Heb. “barren, desert”).
Mount closely related to Sinai; It is supposed to embrace the range of mountains extending about 28° 30′ N, between the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Akaba, and that Sinai is one of its peaks.
Horeb was called the “mountain of God” (Ex. 3:1).
It was there where God had his encounter with Moses, and where he gave his covenant to Israel.
The golden calf was also erected near here (Ex. 17:6; 33:6; Deut. 1:2, 6, 19; 4:10, 15; 29:1; Ps. 106:19).
