Fourth son of Japheth and father of Elisa, Tarshish, Chittim and Dodanim. Javan, territorially, corresponds, in a strict sense, to Ionia, the Greek civilization in Asia Minor, but soon came to denote all Greek peoples (cf. Gen. 10:2, 4; 1 Chron. 1:5, 7; Is. 66:19; Dan. 8:21 [Heb.: "king of Javan"]; Dan. 10:20; 11:2; Zech. 9:13).
In Ez. 27:13 There is no doubt that the Javan that traded with Tire is Greece; but it seems that v. 19 refers to a Javan in southern Arabia (Heb.: "Vedan and Javan of Uzal").
