JEBUSITES

JEBUSITES

Descendants of Canaan, son of Ham (Gen. 10:16; 15:21).
Little is known about them, only that they lived in Jebus.
Joshua killed his king (Joshua 19:23-26) and his territory was assigned to Benjamin (Joshua 18:28).

Finding themselves on the border of their tribe, those of Judah took possession of the city and burned it (Josh. 15:8; Judges 1:8). But the Jebusites either gained a stronghold in the citadel (Ant. 5:2, 2) or later recaptured the city.
They dwelt, as foreigners, among the children of Judah and Benjamin (Josh. 15:63; Judges 1:21; 19:11).
After David’s conquest, there were still Jebusites living in Jerusalem.

Araunah the Jebusite owned the land where the Temple was later built (2 Sam. 24:16, 18; 2 Chron. 3:1).
Solomon levied the remaining Jebusites for public works (1 Kings 9:20, 21).
