KIR-HARESETH

KIR-HARESETH

(2 Kings 3:25; Is. 16:7, 11), also called Kir-Hares (Jer. 48:31, 36) and Kir of Moab (Is. 15:1).

A fortified city in southern Moab, it resisted the allied armies of Israel, Judah and Edom (2 Kings 3:25).

Its modern name is Kerak, east of the Dead Sea and 29 km south of the Arnon. It is a height isolated from the neighboring mountains (except in two points) by deep precipices.

The fortress dominated the important caravan route linking Syria with Egypt and Arabia. The crusaders took over this place and occupied it between 1167 and 1188. Later, Saladin conquered it.
