One who takes up another’s cause, to whom one appeals for help, defender (1 Jn. 2:1). The same Greek word is translated “Comforter” (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7).

We see then that it applies to both the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This is also seen in his words: “I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Comforter.”

The words, “If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous,” apply to the present office of Christ now in glory; He is not advocating for the unconverted, but for Christians when they commit sin; and this before the Father, because he who sins is a son.

The believer’s sin breaks his communion with God, and Christ’s action is to restore this communion. He is the Paraclete in heaven, who intercedes for the saint, and the Holy Spirit is the Paraclete on earth, to ensure the spiritual well-being of the people of God. Cp. also Ro. 8:34; Heh. 7:25; 9:24.
