MAACAH

MAACAH

“oppression”.
(a) A town in Syria (2 Sam. 10:6, 8), its inhabitants were descendants of Nahor (Gen. 22:24),
(b) Wife of Machir son of Manasseh (1 Chr. 7:15, 16).
(c) Concubine of Caleb, son of Hezron (1 Chron. 2:48).
(d) Wife of Jeiel, Saul’s ancestor (1 Chr. 8:29; 9:35).

(e) Daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; she was one of David’s wives and mother of Absalom (2 Sam. 3:3).
(f) Father of Hanan, one of David’s heroes (1 Chr. 11:43).
(g) Father of the leader of the Simeonites under King David (1 Chron. 27:16).

(h) Father of Achish, king of Gath, who was a contemporary of Solomon (1 Kings 2:39; see Achish).
(i) Wife of Rehoboam and daughter of Absalom (1 Kings 15:2; 2 Chron. 11:20-22) or, more probably, granddaughter of Absalom (cf. 2 Chron. 13:2). Mother of King Abijah; After the latter’s death, she retained the title of queen mother, which her grandson Asa withdrew from her, because she had set up an Asherah image (2 Chron. 15:16).

The name of Micaiah that appears in 2 Chron. 13:2 is probably an alteration of the text, since this woman is called Maacah in the other seven passages that mention her (see also 1 Kings 15:10, 13).
