MACHIR
“sold”.
(a) Firstborn of Manasseh and only son (Gen. 50:23; Josh. 17:1), of a Syrian mother (1 Chron. 7:14). Founder of the family of the Machirites, which would have been the only family of Manasseh, if new families had not been formed from certain firstborns (Num. 26:29).
The warlike clan of Machir conquered Gilead. This district was given to the Machirites by order of Moses (Num. 32:39, 40; Josh. 17:1). On Thu. 5:14 Machir poetically refers to the complex of Manasseh east of the Jordan.
(b) Son of Ammiel, a inhabitant of Lodebar, east of the Jordan (2 Sam. 9:4, 5). He supplied provisions to David during Absalom’s rebellion (2 Sam. 17:27).
