MASAH

MASAH

(Heb.: “massah”: “test, temptation”).
Name given by Moses to an Israelite camp where they lacked water. God commanded Moses to strike the rock of Horeb to confound the Israelites’ disbelief, and the water came out (Ex. 17:7; Deut. 6:16; 9:22; Ps. 95:8, 9).

According to Deut. 33:8, the Lord also tested the faithfulness of the Levites in the person of Moses in this way; in Ex. 17:7 this place is called Meribah.
