MERCURY

MERCURY

Divinity worshiped by the Romans under this name, by the Greeks under that of Hermes. Messenger of the gods, he was above all at the service of Jupiter (Gr. Zeus), whom he accompanied.

Mythology attributes great agility and eloquence to him, and he was considered the inventor of letters, music and other arts.

The inhabitants of Lystra considered Paul and Barnabas as gods for having healed a man crippled from birth. Since Paul was the one calling the shots, the pagans took him for Mercury, and believed that Barnabas was Jupiter (Acts 14:12).
