MIGDOL

MIGDOL

“tower”. (a) Camp of the Israelites when they fled from Egypt; It was near the Red Sea (cf. Ex. 15:4, 22; Deut. 11:4); before Pihahiroth and Baal-zephon (Ex. 14:2; Num. 33:7); possibly watchtower.

(b) When Nebuchadnezzar took possession of Jerusalem, some Jews fled to Egypt and settled in a place called Migdol (Jer. 44:1; 46:14).

The best reading of Ex. 29:10; 30:6 appears to be the one that says, “from Migdol to Sevene,” as the KJV renders. Migdol, in the far north of Egypt, can be identified with Magdali of the Tell elAmarna tablets; corresponds to Magdolos in the Itinerarium Antonini, the current Tell el-Heir, 18 km south of Pelusa
