NEBO

NEBO

The heb. «N’bõ» comes from ac. “Nabû” (“call, announce”), name of a Babylonian god. The geographical term could indicate that this place was one of the centers of the cult of Nebo; It could also come from the tree. “naba’a” (to be elevated) which implies height.

(a) Babylonian divinity (Is. 46:1) who presided over knowledge and literary works. The seat of his cult was Borsipa, near Babylon. In the time of Isaiah, statues of Nebo were venerated.

(b) Moabite city, near Nebo, or on this mountain (Num. 32:3). The Reubenites rebuilt it (Num. 32:37, 38; 33:47; cf. 1 Chron. 5:8), but the Moabites took it again (cf. MESA [STELE OF], line 14; Is. 15: 2; Jer. 48:1, 22). Probable location near Khirbet el-Mhayiet, south of the Nebo-Siãghah mountain.

(c) City mentioned immediately after Bethel and Ai (Ezra 2:29; Neh. 7:33). Conder identifies it with Nûba, east of Khirbet Kîla.
