NETINEOS
“givens, gifts.”
Servants that David and the princes gave to the Levites for the humble services of the temple (Ezra 8:20). Previously, such work had been done by Midianites (Num. 3:47) and by Gibeonites (Josh. 9).
After the captivity, a fairly large number of them returned with Ezra (Ezra 2:55-58) and with Nehemiah (Neh. 7:57-60).
The Nethinim appear to have been naturalized foreigners and not legitimate Jews (1 Chron. 9:2; Ezra 2:59).
Since the work of the Nethinim was related to temple service, they were exempt from tribute (Ezra 7:24). They made a covenant with God together with the rest of the people (Neh. 10:28, 29).
