OFFENSE

OFFENSE

(a) This word is used in the ordinary sense of sin, fault, or displeasure (Rom. 4:25; 5:15-20; 2 Cor. 11:7; Jas. 2:10; 3:2); in the sense of a stumbling block, scandal, or cause of sin to others (2 Cor. 6:3).

Christians are required not to give occasion or reason for others to stumble (Rom. 14:13-21; 1 Cor. 8:9-13; 10:32; 2 Cor. 6:3).

(b) Harm caused or injury to any person. The Mosaic Law required the guilty not only to make restitution to the wronged person or give him satisfaction, but also to present an offering at the altar to be reconciled to the One who rules all things (Lev. 5; 6:1-7; Ps. 51:4). Christ demands that we forgive each other (Mt. 6:14, 15; 5:23, 24).
