OIL

OIL

For the Hebrews, it was mainly olive oil. In the description of the wealth of the land, one of the things mentioned is “a land flowing with oil…”; Among the blessings mentioned with which God was going to enrich his obedient people was that his oil would be multiplied (Deut. 7:13; 8:8). It was a valuable item, and was used for different purposes.

It was used as:
food (2 Chr. 2:10, 15; 11:11; Ps. 55:21);
to anoint priests and kings (Lev. 8:12; 1 Sam. 10:1; 16:1, 13);

in the sacrifices of the food offering (Heb. “minchãb”, Lev. 2:1-16);
as an ingredient in holy anointing oil (Ex. 30:24, 25); (see ANOINTING)

as a cosmetic (Ps. 23:5; 92:10; Luke 7:46);
as fuel in lamps (Ex. 35:8, 14);
as an emollient (Luke 10:34).
The oil is a type of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 25:3-10; Heb. 1:9).
