City in the southwest of the island of Cyprus, which today is called Kuklia, near Cape Zephyrium.
A distinction was made between old and new Paphos: the latter was a seaport about 16 km to the northwest, and was the capital of the Roman province of Cyprus, and residence of the proconsul.
Ancient Paphos had a famous temple dedicated to the cult of Astarte, which the Greeks transformed into a temple to Aphrodite (Homer, Odyssey VIII, 362).
The apostle Paul visited Paphos (Acts 13:6-13).
The modern name of new Paphos is Baffo.
