PHILIPPI
City of Thrace, in eastern Macedonia. Formerly “Krenides”,
Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, conquered it, fortifying it and giving it his name (356 BC).
It was the first city in Europe visited by Paul (52 AD). His preaching resulted in the conversion of Lydia and others. When a python spirit was cast out of a young woman, a tumult was caused; Paul and Silas were whipped and thrown into prison, this led to the conversion of the jailer (Acts 16:12-40).
Paul visited this city again shortly after (Acts 20:6).
Philippi was inland, about 16 km northwest of Neapolis. A mountain range separated both cities; To get from one to the other you had to go through a 487 m mountain pass. above sea level.
At first Philippi occupied a small eminence in the middle of the plain. The city is called Kavalla today, and all that remains of the ancient city is a large number of ruins.
