POPLAR

POPLAR

It was probably the white poplar (Populus alba) that Jacob used (Gen. 30:37). It was “green” in the sense of cool, moist.

The poplar offers refreshing shade from the sun’s rays, and was therefore one of the trees chosen by the Israelites to offer incense under (Hos. 4:13).

There are also those who believe that “libneh” refers to the “storax” (styrax officinale), which is also bred in Palestine.
