RECHABITES

RECHABITES

Branch of the Kenites who lived among the Israelites. Jonadab, their leader, ordered them to abstain from wine and all fermented beverages; that they did not live in houses, and that they did not cultivate vineyards or fields, but lived in tents.

These rules were intended to preserve the simplicity of nomadic life. Much later, the prophet Jeremiah tested the Rechabites, verifying that they were faithful to the command received.

The Lord promised the Rechabites that their lineage would not become extinct (Jer. 35:1-19). They still exist today in Mesopotamia and Yemen.
